BEHIND THE SCENES
This was us trying to find where and in what position the murder would be committed, notice the blood on my hands!!
This was a scratched shot since it looked very forced but we put fake blood on the floor as drops dripped down from the knife after the murder.
This was us creating the fake blood and testing how it looked on camera.
ps it consisted of red food coloring and cornflour mixed with water.
This was a sample photo I took to look at it as a reference before we actually started shooting The video.
This was the fake blood we created
The dead body laying down
IMPROV AND DIRECTING
We used improv multiple times throughout this journey, from removing the blood dripping scene,
and the knife scene with a person staring us down shown at the end in both the storyboarding and script, we did record it but it did not fit the overall non-chalant and dark aesthetic of the short film hence we decided not to use it,
Other scenes such as the police one felt too forced and due to our novice acting skills it didnt fit the aesthetic nor the vibe and we had to scratch that too,
In conclusion I am very content with how the film turned out, however some changes had to be made for the good, no films perfect and every films based on perspective!
Filming
My filming consisted majorly of using an IPhone and lowering the exposure in respect to every scene this was a pretty simple procedure however the techniques I used varied ever so slightly.
Taking multiple shots of every scene helped me to create variety and increase the choices for shots I had;
This was everyone gathered for the shooting
The shots below are for the 2 scene this took us a great while since we wanted to show blood on the bathroom floor however it was messing up our whole vibe, we then decided to go for the other shot. The multiple shoots gave us variety, we decided to try different forms of lighting such as high key and different positions for the dead body.
(A BLOOPER WE HAD THE DEAD BODY PLAY THE GUITAR AS A JOKE AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE VIDEO DOWN BELOW!!!)
Real Dedication!!
This was our technique for analysing most of our shots and actually filming, with a repetitive pattern we finally found our rhythm. The filming itself took about 6-8 hours creating a bubble where we relied on each other's advice and instincts for the video.
What did I learn and what were my mistakes?
My biggest mistake throughout this whole process was not knowing how to execute a successful shoot, directing was a tough part including but not limited to, gathering people taking the shots and analysing how they were to be placed on top of each other, this was a hassle in editing as well since I couldn't edit alone and required the help of a friend all in all my whole process made me realize how to get stuff done and Power through, these were done through techniques such as endurance critical thinking and realising, how practice brings everything together. As an amateur my topic was very tough however my execution itself was fairly satisfactory.
Acting and Cinematography
Acting was the most important part of my video it was very tough to execute since I was pretty new to it and was a big risk.
I had an actor on stand by however I decided to go for the role myself since I wanted to experience this moment myself.
Ever since I was a child I've watched movies however never did I want to be an actor, however it is through our experiences that we learn and I decided to go for it.
My favourite actor growing up was Keanu Reeves an amazing down to earth person with a rigid yet relaxed acting style he was my inspiration for the film as you can see in the movie John Wick, where he walks relaxed after committing several murders!!
I went to embody that role and push myself to put myself in his shoes through a sociological tactic known as "Verstahen" , verstahen is the act of empathy where a person takes the place of another person or sees the world through his shoes in order to execute his mental psychoanalysis of the person or group, an example is Venkatesh's Longitudal Study of a Criminal Gang.
This led me to embody the role of a favourite actor.
However the real issues that arose were the acting itself, I however through the help of my friends learned as shown in the below videos,
This was me laughing due to the fact I was told to lay down for the final scene on a public street!!
Me trying to sway as the music ringed in my ears while a car passed through and I got nervous,
The following scenes were me practicing my scenes as I acted them in the video,
This one was me getting arrested for a draft video,
This one was me following the typical 1, 2 3 formation where I was checking if the acting was up to par,
All in all the acting was a great part, it was a new experience and taught me that acting was so much more then just pretending and that it was a embodiment of the character of judas himself!
Acting is the unsung hero of human connection - it's the thread that weaves stories into our collective consciousness, allowing us to empathize, to understand, and to feel seen. Through acting, we're able to walk in others' shoes, to experience their struggles and triumphs, and to find common ground. It's a powerful tool for social commentary, for sparking important conversations, and for challenging our assumptions. But perhaps most profoundly, acting reminds us of our shared humanity - it shows us that, despite our differences, we're all connected by our emotions, our vulnerabilities, and our capacity for love.
The Cinematography used is listed below
● Long Shot : The long shot will be used to further define the situation and the character. This would further paint a picture and the context of what's happening throughout the scene. The lighting and costumes would be most likely revealed in these.
● Medium shot: This would be used in order to show the subtle actions and details of the character, showing the, hoodie representing the youth rebellion culture. This would also show just enough before getting intimate with the character which for this video would not be good as there needs to be a mysterious aura to the subject.
● Extreme closeup shot : This would be taken in order to reveal the danger and the surprise the only moment we get intimate with the subject showing his vulnerability and fear, this is going to add some variety and pop to the video.
● High Angle Camera/ Aerial: The start will consist of a high angle camera shot depicting the weakness in the murderer even though he'll be at power then also creating a unique and appealing to the eyes composition.
● Dolly out : A light dolly out movement will be shown in order to reveal the setting to the viewers subtly hinting towards the upcoming scene.
Moreover the Sounds used in the movie would consist of,
■ Digetic Sound : This is the main type of sounds used in our video, from the sound of water from the tap running to the stomping of the feet in scene 2 and the music!
■ Contrapunctual Sound : This is used to
show the intensity of the scene as well as the slow but intense buildup creating a sense of fear and restlessness amongst the viewers.
Furthermore the types of editing that this will consist of as are follows,
★ Jump cut : This would be the main form of editing used since the video will be pretty fast paced, this would compliment the setting amazingly in my opinion.
★ Cutting on action : Another very important editing trick used here is cutting on action this is because since it's a thriller having a few twists and turns would keep the audience intrigued and portray the idea much more clearly.
★ The fade out transition : This would be used to indicate the end since the fading in of the blackness would indicate the last full capacity of a scene. further define the situation and the character.
